Government professional colleges to admit them

Bangalore: Second-year Pre-University students who have cleared supplementary examinations need not worry about lost months now.

A high-level meeting, chaired by Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali here on Monday, decided to allow students who have passed the supplementary second PU examination, to get admitted in government engineering and dental colleges.

Seat allotment

Speaking to presspersons here after the meeting, the Minister said: “We will also request the private managements to give admission to these students. If they do agree, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) will allot the seats,” he said.

About the students holding on to Common Entrance Test (CET) seats in National Institute of Technology-Suratkal, Mr. Limbavali said that these students had been cautioned to surrender their CET seats, if they have sought admission through the national quota.

“On Monday, about 20 students surrendered their CET seats. They may do so only till August 25, as the casual vacancy round begins on August 27,” he said.

About the Government’s decision to promote the establishment of private universities in the State, the Minister said that the Government was now studying the model adopted by other States and also looking at the University Grants Commission norms.

Legislation

“The next step will be then to bring in legislation regarding the same. We have set a target of achieving 15 per cent enrolment in higher education. With the setting up of private universities, there will be healthy competition between them and government institutions,” the Minister added.

S.G. Hedge, Commissioner, Department of PU Education; Syed Jamal, Special Officer, KEA; Ramanand Shetty, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences; H.P. Khincha, Vice-Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University; and senior department officials were present at the meeting.
