India crushes Russia

NEW DELHI: Defending champion and second seed India crushed favourite Russia 3.5-0.5 to pull off the most unexpected one-sided result of the World Youth (under-16) chess championship at Mersin in Turkey on Monday.

Leading results: World Youth Championship (second round): India (6.5) beat Russia (4) 3.5-0.5 (B. Adhiban bt Aleksandr Shimanov; S. P. Sethuraman drew with Anastasia Bodnaruk; M. Shyam Sundar bt Varvara Repina; Prasanna Rao bt Ilia Iljiushenok); Greece (4.5) lost to Armenia (7.5) 0.5-3.5; Switzerland ‘A’ (4.5) lost to Turkey ‘A’ (7.5) 0.5-3.5; Sri Lanka (4) lost to Azerbaijan (6); Philippines (7) bt Slovakia (5) 3-1; Georgia (7) bt England (5) 3-1.
