MADURAI: The Madurai Regional Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will have its own state-of-the- art premises here at a cost of Rs.6 crore with the State Government recently allotting land for the university in the city outskirts. One-acre land has been provided at Kovilpappakudi near Koodal Nagar by the district administration for setting up the university’s regional centre that caters to students of 17 districts in the State. “Foundation stone laying ceremony will be held soon in the presence of Vice-Chancellor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai and Collector S. S. Jawahar. The university thanks the district administration for giving land at a very nominal price,” K. Panneerselvam, IGNOU Regional Director, told The Hindu on Sunday. The Regional Centre is temporarily functioning from CSI Institutional Campus in Pasumalai in the city. While the Government had allotted land, the varsity headquarters has sanctioned Rs.6 crore towards construction of a sophisticated building with all student-centric facilities. According to S. Balasubramanian, Assistant Registrar at the Regional Centre, the location of the new building is easily approachable from Koodal Nagar railway station and will be equipped with EDUSAT facility/tele-conferencing. It will have space for ‘Gyan Vani FM Radio station’ in the campus itself. The building plan is being prepared by the Central Public Works Department and the entire project will be completed in two years. Dr. Panneerselvam said that the reach of Madurai regional centre was very wide as it catered to over 10,000 students from all southern districts, besides The Nilgiris, Thanjavur, Coimbatore and Karur. IGNOU headquarters upgraded the Madurai sub-regional centre to a full-fledged regional centre in January through a special notification.
