KARUR: Public should make full use of the gram sabha meetings to acquaint themselves of the development works being carried out in their localities, District Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here on Friday. Participating in a gram sabha meeting held at Vettamangalam panchayat near here, Mr. Venkatesh said that people had a right to know about the various development works and welfare schemes being undertaken by the State Government. Pointing out the noteworthy performance of the women self help groups in repaying promptly the loans they had borrowed from the banks, Mr. Venkatesh said that once the groups completed six months they would be graded and credit would be extended to them through schemes for their economic development. Mr. Venkatesh also called upon those who wanted to effect corrections in the draft photo electoral rolls by applying through the proper channel before August 20, the extended deadline. The Collector assured the panchayat residents that the district administration would take all efforts to develop the locality. Vettamangalam panchayat president, Rajeshwari, presided over the meeting, in which Assistant Director, (Panchayats), G. Sivaprakasam, Karur Panchayat Union Chairperson, Valarmathi Chidambaram, Lead District Manager, K. Chandrasekaran, and other officials participated. The Collector also gave away assistance worth Rs. 6 lakh to two women self help groups and one men SHG on the occasion. He also inspected the desilting of a channel, undertaken at a cost of Rs. 8.40 lakh under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme between Pungodai and Vadugapatti. Gram sabha meetings were conducted in all the 158 panchayats in Karur district.
