IN MEMORIAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan arrives at Guruvayur on Saturday to inaugurate the Guruvayur Satyagraha Memorial Mandiram. Guruvayur: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has called upon the people to be vigilant against religious bigotry and casteism. He was addressing a meeting to inaugurate the Guruvayur Satyagraha Memorial Mandiram here on Saturday. The Guruvayur Satyagraha (1931-32) had campaigned for allowing Dalits into the Guruvayur Sreekrishna Temple. During the satyagraha, social reformer K. Kelappan launched a fast. It was called off at the initiative of nationalist leaders. “Casteism is thriving in the State. Even in the age of science, superstition runs rife. The historic Guruvayur Satyagraha has inspired many struggles against racial discrimination and upper-caste dominance,” Mr. Achuthanandan said. Guruvayur Devaswom chairman Thottathil Ravindran presided. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, K.V. Abdul Khader, Murali Perunnelly, Babu M. Palissery, District Collector V.K. Baby and Devaswom administrator V. Ratheesan were among those who were present on the occasion. The Rs.7.5-crore complex includes the Poonthanam hall and 28 rooms.
