CHENNAI: The Nautical Advisor to the Government of India and Chief Examiner of Master and Mates, Directorate General of Shipping, M.M. Saggi, highlighted the significant contribution made by International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Speaking at a national seminar on “IMO: 60 years in the service of shipping” organised by the AMET University, here on Saturday, Capt. Saggi explained how the IMO had developed and adopted international regulations and global standards for seafarers, as well as international conventions and codes relating to search and rescue operations in particular.

Capt. Saggi said while the maritime industry was facing severe manpower shortage, the Directorate-General of Shipping was examining ways to encourage training institutions such as the AMET to fill the gap.

The Director Fleet Personnel, ISHIMA Private Limited of Singapore, Joseph Peter D’Mello, spoke on the importance of introducing new strategies to help retain the manpower and also to tackle its shortage.
