Pranav and Daya corner glory

KOCHI: Ernakulam’s fourth-seeded Pranav Satheesh surprised top-seeded Arun George and won the under-16 boys’ singles title in the Kerala State sub-junior badminton championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Saturday evening.

Pranav had upset second-seeded V.H. Bharath in the semifinal earlier. However, the girls’ final went on the expected lines with Ernakulam’s top-seeded Daya Elsa Jacob winning the title.

The very promising Daya defeated Anjali Maria Sunil 21-7, 21-17.

Ernakulam’s M.R. Arjun and Kozhikode’s K.P. Sruthi won the under-13 boys’ and

Girls’ singles titles respectively.

The results:

Boys, under-16 singles final: Pranav Satheesh (Ekm) bt Arun George (Ekm) 21-14, 21-8. Semifinals: Pranav bt V.H. Bharath 21-13, 21-14; Arun bt Sharon Raphael (Ekm) 17-21, 21-16, 21-14. Doubles final: Arun George/Sharon Raphael (Ekm) bt V.H. Bharath/Pranav Satheesh (Ekm) 23-21, 21-15.

Under-13 singles final: M.R. Arjun (Ekm) bt S. Bichu (Tvm) 21-11, 21-5. Doubles final: M.R. Arjun/Rohit Victor (Ekm) bt S. Bichu/M.Adarsh (Tvm) 21-23, 23-21, 22-20.

Girls, under-16 singles final: Daya Elsa Jacob (Ekm) bt Anjali Maria Sunil (Ekm) 21-7, 21-17. Semifinals: Anjali vs Arathi Sarah Sunil 8-10 (conceded); Daya bt Anoosha 21-12, 21-10, Doubles final: Anjali Maria Sunil/Arathi Sarah Sunil (Ekm) bt Daya & Anoosha (Ekm/Koz) 21-18, 21-18.

Under-13 girls’ singles final: K.P. Sruthi (Kzd) bt J.K. Malavika (Tvm) 21-19, 21-12. Doubles final: J.K. Malavika/S. Sruthi (Tvm) bt K.P. Sruthi/N. Aswathy (Kzd) 21-14, 21-11.

Veteran men’s singles final: Roy Kuriakose (Ekm) bt Abdul Salam (Ekm) 25-23, 12-21, 21-16. Doubles final: M.F. Johnson/Bose Ninan (Ekm) bt Kamaludeen/K.J. Roy (Ekm) 21-13, 15-21, 21-19.

Masters men’s singles final: Raviprasad (Ekm) bt V. Srikanth (Ekm) 21-17,21-15. Doubles final: George Thomas/Nahas (Ekm) bt Bosco Spartan/Manoj (Ekm) 22-20, 21-15.
