“Students have a role in combating corruption”

CHENNAI: Many of the 442 graduate students from various parts of the country who took part in a national level essay competition on ‘corruption’ wrote that preaching by elders against corruption did not inspire the youth as most of the elders had not fought against corruption when they had the power and energy.

The essay competition was conducted by Nandini Voice for the Deprived, a non-governmental organisation and supported by Transparency International and Shamdasani Foundation, Hong Kong.

Distributing prizes to winners of the competition at a function, organised here on Friday on “Rampant corruption in India,” former Chief Vigilance Commissioner N.Vittal said that the nexus between politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, NGOs and criminals had contributed to corruption.

He pointed out that some loopholes in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act were aiding corrupt practices. “The right to information is a good tool for the citizen to combat corruption. The students have to play a role in combating corruption,” said Mr.Vittal.

L.S. Ganesh, head, Department of Management Studies, IIT-Madras, and N.S.Venkataraman, trustee, Nandini Voice of the Deprived, spoke.
