‘Suspend stir, begin talks’

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday expressed concern over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and called for suspension of the agitations in Jammu and the Kashmir Valley and resolution of the Amarnath land row through discussions.

The party also called for urgent steps by the Union government to ensure that the national highway was not blocked by agitators.

In a statement here, the Polit Bureau of the party said the serious situation in the State was compounded by the tragic loss of lives in police firing.

“The urgent need of the hour is to suspend the agitations in both Jammu and the Kashmir Valley and to resolve the issues through discussion and dialogue.”

All parties concerned should desist from taking steps that would affect the age-old harmony between the two communities and regions of the State, it said.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has also urged the Union government to immediately initiate a dialogue with the agitating people and organisations in both regions of the State, first separately and then jointly.
