Easing congestion: City corporation personnel taking away goods from the footpath near Gandhi Square in Mysore on Wednesday.

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) launched a massive drive on Wednesday to clear encroachment on footpaths in the city.

Corporation personnel led by senior officials cleared encroachment on footpaths of Ashoka Road, Gandhi Square, K.T. Street, Irwin Road, Sub-urban Bus-stand and around Town Hall.

Many traders were caught unawares when the corporation personnel descended in front of their shops and began taking away the goods.

The corporation personnel cleared many roads of vendors in various parts of the city. “We did not encounter any resistance from the encroachers. Many of them vacated the footpaths during the drive,” MCC Commissioner K.N. Lingappa told The Hindu. He said that the drive would continue till encroachment on the footpaths in the heart of the city was cleared.

“We are determined to clear the encroachment on footpaths in the heart of the city,” he added. The encroachment on footpaths had become a nuisance for the people, who find little space to walk. A committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Mayor Ayub Khan, comprising officials such as Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan, Police Commissioner Parashivamurthy and Mr. Lingappa to take action on rehabilitating the roadside vendors. The MCC authorities are planning to continue the drive till this week-end. “Even if we suspend the operation for a day on August 15, we will resume it on Saturday,” a corporation official said.
