MYSORE: Chinese students pursuing a two-year B.Tech. programme in Information Technology at the University of Mysore have gone back home. The reason is obvious — to watch the ongoing Beijing Olympics.

The students from Wuhan province wrote the second semester examination in July. On completing their last paper on July 31, about 97 students went back to China for a month-long vacation.

The vacation will be extremely memorable for the students as they did not want to miss the Olympics, which China is hosting.

“The students were keen to watch the Olympics and so we planned their examination schedule in such a manner that they could make it back home to watch the events,” said Hemanth Kumar, Professor in Computer Science, University of Mysore, who is coordinating the B.Tech. course.

Of the four semesters, the students have finished two semesters and they are expected to return before September 10.

“Barring four to five students, all of them have gone back home for a vacation. Even the remaining ones will leave for China in a couple of days,” Mr. Kumar told The Hindu.

The University of Mysore and Wuhan University have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the student exchange programme and to improve academic ties between them.

The students have already finished a two-year diploma in IT at Wuhan and their academic credits have been transferred to the University of Mysore, which awards degrees after completion of the B. Tech course.

The B.Tech. classes began on October 1, 2007.

Next year, another batch of students from Haunghaui University will pursue the same course.

“At least 87 students from Haunghaui University will come next year to pursue the same course. Before their arrival, the International Students’ Hostel will be ready where they will be provided accommodation,” Mr. Kumar said.
