Scrutiny of forms to be held on Aug.28 Code of conduct to remain in force till Sept. 20 BHUBANESWAR: The stage is now set for elections to 92 urban local bodies in the State. The notification for the polls was issued by the State Election Commission here on Monday. The polls will be held on September 19. The coming polls to the civic bodies in the State would be crucial for the ruling Biju Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party as both Assembly and Lok Sabha polls were scheduled to be held early next year. The schedule of the polls was announced by the State Election Commissioner Sanjib Chandra Hota at a press conference. The poll code came into effect with the issuance of the notification, he informed. The code of conduct will remain in force till the counting of votes was over on September 20. Poll scheduleAs per the schedule nomination forms for the civic body polls will be issued from August 20 to August 26, except holidays. The list of nomination forms received at the offices of the Election Officers of different urban bodies will be published everyday at 5 p.m. Mr. Hota informed that the scrutiny of nomination forms will be held on August 28, and the respective Election Officers will publish a list of the forms that would be found valid on August 29. The candidates who would intend to withdraw their nomination papers will be allowed to do so up to 3 p.m. on September 1, and a final list of contesting candidates will be published the same day at 5 p.m. The election for the post of Chairperson of the civic bodies from among the elected councillors will be held on September 24, and for the post of Vice-Chairperson on October 15, according to Mr. Hota. The Election Commission has already held a meeting of all the political parties for smooth conduct of the polls. The meeting was held on July 28. Subsequently, the Commission also convened a meeting of all District Collectors and Superintendent of Police of all the 30 districts for discussion on various matters relating to conduct of the elections. There are a total of 103 civic bodies in the State and the term of 96 are ending by September. While polls will be held for 1,548 wards in 92 bodies, polls to the urban bodies in Balasore, Baripada, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar will not be held as matters pertaining them was pending before courts. The polls for the remaining seven urban local bodies will be held sometimes in 2010 and 1011.
