Husband, daughter escape unhurt

Lorry driver loses control of vehicle

TAMBARAM: A 36-year-old woman and her one-year-old son were crushed to death when they were run over by a water tanker lorry at Manapakkam on the Mount–Poonamallee road on Sunday morning.

A family of four was returning home in Mowlivakkam near Porur by a TVS Scooty Pep scooter after attending the Sunday morning mass at A.G. Church in Little Mount, Saidapet. At Manapakkam, soon after the water tanker overtook a bus, the driver is reported to have lost control of his vehicle and hit the scooter ahead of him.

Justin Raj and his four-year-old daughter who fell on the left side of the road escaped unhurt.

Esther, who had strapped her son Jackson to her back, fell on the road and came under the wheels of the lorry.

Lorry driver Ulaganathan surrendered at the Nandambakkam police station.

Traffic police said the family should not have travelled such a long distance on a scooter. Residents said it was a clear case of police failure to curb triple riding.

After post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to relatives.

They were taken to their native place in Kanyakumari district.

Nandambakkam police registered a case, conducted preliminary investigations and transferred it to Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation).

The tanker lorry was transporting water to the construction site of an Information Technology park in Manapakkam.
