NEW DELHI: Hot favourite D. Harika crushed Kazakhstan’s Guliskhan Nakhbayeva in 46 moves to enjoy a half-point lead after the girls’ seventh round of the World junior chess championship at Gaziantep, Turkey, on Friday. Harika, at six points, is followed in the joint fourth place by teammate R. Preethi, who pulled off a creditable draw against USA’s Tataev Abrahamyan and reached five points. In the open section, Indians continue to struggle. Abhijeet Gupta paid the price for being too adventurous against Azerbaijan’s Eltaj Safarli and lost in 72 moves. Fellow Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi, seeded 26, easily drew with third-seeded Russian Dmitry Andreikin in just 21 moves. Meanwhile, in Badalona International Open at Badalona, Spain, S. Kidambi moved closer to winning the title and claiming a nine-game Grandmaster norm after beating compatriot Grandmaster P. Magesh Chandran in the eighth round. P.
