THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has resolved to capitalise on the ideological clarity and the end to schism in its State unit after the Kottayam State conference and the Coimbatore party Congress to focus on improving the track record of the LDF government. In a statement issued after a three-day State committee meeting here on Saturday, the party laid out the contours of the direction the LDF government would take in the coming days. It said the State committee noted that 385 or 85 per cent of the 455 items in the party’s election manifesto had been fulfilled. The committee felt that the State government’s achievements had not got wide propaganda and sought urgent steps to address this shortcoming. Another important decision was to launch a massive awareness campaign against the UPA government’s “total failure in solving burning issues affecting the people such as price rise and the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement.” The y statement mentions steps taken by the government to improve the quality of school education and the continued attempts to ensure social justice and merit in admissions. It said the onus was on the government to ensure that reservation, merit and the interests of the poor students were protected. The statement asserted that the State government had succeeded in preventing farmers’ suicides as a result of the firm steps taken in the agriculture sector. It said the success in converting public sector undertakings into profit-making units was enviable. The Smart City agreement was symbolic in terms of the big leap that the private sector was poised to take. It also listed out the State government’s efforts in reviving the traditional industry and the fisheries sector, and success in other areas related to tourism, road transport, health, youth and sports affairs, cooperation, forest and water management. “Had the monsoons not failed, it would have been possible to reach more benefits to the people,” the statement said. The statement said focus would be given on the EMS housing scheme, Food Security Programme, coastal development package, power and infrastructure development projects. Land useLand utilisation also received special mention, with a special directive to take over excess land and encroached government land, besides redistribution of land to tribals. Efforts would be taken to contain real estate speculation, but land needed for industrial development would be made available.
