Chennai: St. Joseph’s College of Engineering won the Redeemer Cup inter-Collegiate women’s volleyball tournament, beating Panimalar College of Engineering 25-18, 25-19 recently. Apart from the trophy, the players received individual medals and a cash prize of Rs. 4,000. In the semifinals, St. Joseph’s beat Ethiraj 25-18, 25-16 and eliminated YMCA 25-8, 25-8 in the quarterfinals. St. Joseph’s beat JBAS 25-0, 25-9 and Panimalar 25-16, 20-25, 25-21 in the first and second rounds respectively. Champions TrophyThe Chennai District Volleyball Club will conduct the Super Six Champions Trophy for men and women, sponsored by the Hindustan University, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, here from August 30 to September 5. The total prize money for men is Rs. 1 lakh and for women Rs.30,000. The top six teams in the men’s senior league will compete for the Dr. K.C.G. Varghese Trophy. The teams in the fray are IOB, Southern Railway, Indian Bank, Sathyabhama University, SDAT, and ICF. The women’s event (August 30 to September 4) will be an invitation tournament involving eight teams — Dr. Sivanthi Club, GKM Club, Hindustan Sports Foundation, Panimalar Engineering College, SRM University, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, SDAT and Tamil Nadu Police. Easy for SKRSKR Engineering defeated Velammal College of Engineering 45-20 in the St. Joseph’s College-Raghavendra all-India inter-collegiate basketball tournament recently. The results: Men: SKR Engineering 45 (Mohan 12, Jaxon 11) bt Velammal CE 20 (Hemanth Kumar 10); College of Engineering (Guindy) 49 ( Narendran 14, Ram Shankar 17) bt Patrician College 30 (Sheldon 17); St. Joseph’s 34 (Rajun 11, Vaidyanathan 15) bt Srinivas Engineering 16; St. Joseph’s ‘B’ 47 (Ashok 14, Bobson 10) bt Nazareth College 33 (Karthik 12); SKR Engineering 45 (Uday 15, Sunil 12) bt Gurunanak 13. Women: St. Joseph’s 52 (Seetha 20, Ashey 11) bt WCC 21 (Kavitha 12). Inter-collegiate volleyballNellai Friends Volleyball Club and the Chennai District Volleyball Association will conduct the dawn-to-dusk inter-collegiate championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on August 24. Corporate footballThe Chennai leg of the National Kingfisher corporate football fives, organised by SPT Sports will be held on Sept. 13 and 14 at the YMCA ground.
