Of the seven refugee camps in Tiruchi Range, three are in Pudukottai district, two in Karur and one each in Tiruchi Rural and Perambalur district. Ever since the serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad recently, security was stepped up by increasing the number of beats and by conducting night checks besides heightening surveillance in bus stands, he said adding that these measures would continue till Independence Day. Stating that the performance of the law enforcers was good, he said as many as 79 persons were detained under the Goondas Act till now this year in Tiruchi Range. The figure was more in comparison with 2007 when 42 persons were detained under the Act during the whole year. Similarly, the number of persons detained under the Bootleggers Act was also high so far this year as compared to last year. A total of 36 persons were detained under the Bootleggers Act up to July this year, while 29 persons were detained under the same Act during 2007. There was a drop in grave crime cases such as murder for gain and dacoity in Tiruchi Range in the current year till now. Only two murders for gain cases and a dacoity case had been reported so far, DIG Rathore said adding that 10 murders for gain and three dacoity cases were reported last year. The police had concentrated on checking over speeding and drunken driving as these two were the primary causes for road accidents.
