Kozhikode
The girl had eloped with a youth a week ago and had married him at a temple on Wednesday. Kozhikode: In a dramatic turn of events, the Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Friday granted permission to the girl whom the police had taken into custody on Wednesday to live with her husband. Magistrate Suresh Kumar asked the girl Priya Rathanlal with whom she wanted to go with after examining a report of the doctors of the Government Mental Health Centre at Kuthiravattom here stating that she was mentally stable. On Thursday, the court had remanded her to a rescue home after her father, Rathanlal, submitted before court that his daughter had been kidnapped and was mentally unstable. The court also found that she had attained 18 years of years. The girl had eloped with Jomesh, 24, a week ago and had married him at a temple on Court Road on Wednesday. However, the Nadakkavu police took them into custody following a commotion at the marriage ceremony. Previously, they had attempted to tie the knot at Arya Samajam on Ram Mohan Road. However, the girl’s parents and their supporters had disrupted the function. The parents of the girl had filed a complaint that their daughter had gone missing a week ago. The police arrested five persons including Rajesh, brother of Jomesh. Joji, another brother of Jomesh, allegedly committed suicide fearing his arrest. This created tension at Eranhipalam on Thursday. The local people prevented Assistant Collector N. Prasanth from conducting an inquest. Probe begins
Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner Anup Kuruvilla John has started investigations into the incident relating to the crime registered at the Nadakkavu police station. He is being assisted by the District Special Branch. Kannur Range IG V. Shantaram had ordered the inquiry. An allegation is that Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) C.M. Pradeep Kumar took the couple into custody illegally and had also tortured Jomesh’s brother and his friends who questioned the police action. All of them have been admitted with injuries to the Government General Hospital here. Earlier, the court had remanded them to judicial custody and later released them on bail. Mr. John is expected to file the report on Sunday or Monday.
