1.56 lakh NREGP beneficiaries in Karur district

KARUR: A total of 1,56,356 persons have been enrolled as beneficiaries in the 158 village panchayats under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme in Karur district, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh.

During 2008-09 under the NREGP, a sum of Rs. 9.26 crore has been allotted for the district and works identified. During the previous year, 162 works were carried out, he said after inspecting ongoing works under the programme at Balarajapuram panchayat on Wednesday.

Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh staged a demo here on Tuesday demanding abrogation of contractual jobs and seeking full implementation of labour welfare legislation.

BMS district president Durai Ravi led the demo in front of the Taluk office.
