Chennai: Inside forward Rasana played a stellar role in piloting Madurai District Hockey Club to a 5-2 victory over Vivekananda College of Arts and Science, Tiruchengode, in the final of the Winning XI Women’s HC State-level tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Wednesday. Rasana struck thrice and Pavithra twice. The team got a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 donated by Mr. S.R. Bhasgeran of Reserve Bank of India. The runner-up, Vivekananda College, received Rs. 10,000 from the same donor. Rasana struck in the early minutes, but Saranya produced the equaliser from a stroke to make it 1-1 before half-time. Shortly after the break it looked as though Madurai was at the receiving end but Rasana put the team ahead followed by Pavithra. Then Sophie reduced the margin. And in the last 10 minutes, Rasana and Pavithra put the issue beyond doubt. Earlier, Punitha Arogya HC, Keeranur, gained the third place beating Nazarath Club, Chennai, by six goals to one. Ms. S.K. Gariyali, IAS, Principal Secretary (Retd) to Governor of Tamil Nadu, gave away the prizes. The results: Final: Madurai District HC 5 (Rasana 3, Pavithra 2) beat Vivekananda College of Arts and Science, Tiruchengode, 2 (Saranya, Sophie). 3-4 places: Punitha Arogya HC, Keeranur, 6 (Nitya, Maria Anburani, Santhanavalli 2, Ramya 2) beat Nazarath Club 1 (Lavanya). Ihsaan in semifinalsIhsaan Hussain clawed his way into the semifinals of the India Pistons-KTC-TNTA junior tennis tournament (u-14), beating R. Vivek in three sets on Wednesday. In the girls’ singles, K. Binu swamped Sanjana without the loss of a single game. The results (quarterfinals): Boys: T. Vignesh bt Vishnu J.J. Sree 6-1, 6-1; Keerthi Nathan bt Anmol Sagar 6-2, 6-1; Akil Kanakaraj bt Rohan Sagar 6-2, 6-4; Ihsaan Hussain bt R. Vivek 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Girls: Lavanya Saravanan bt Sheetal Issac 6-2, 6-3; A. MCC is hostThe Madras Cricket Club will host the adidas-MCC National junior and sub-junior tennis championship from August 25 to 30. Events in boys’ and girls’ under-18 and under-14 categories will be held. The qualifying signing-in for boys will take place on August 22 between noon and 2 p.m., and on August 23 for girls between Noon and 2 p.m. The signing-in for the main draw takes place between noon and 2 p.m. on August 24 and 25, for boys and girls respectively. Varun Kumar made centuries and shared an unbroken 220-run third wicket partnership as Kancheepuram strolled to a first innings lead win over Villupuram on the second day of their inter-district under-22 match on Wednesday. The scores: Villupuram DCA 215 drew with Kancheepuram 267 for two in 62 overs (A.C. Parthipan 102 n.o., K. Varun Kumar 131 n.o.). Kancheepuram won on first innings lead. Ashwath scalps fourS. Cricket trialsTrials to select the Kancheepuram DCA under-14 cricket team will be held on August 17 at 6 a.m. at the Guru Nanak College nets. Players born on or after September 2, 1994, and studying in a school within the Kancheepuram district limits, are eligible. They have to produce bonafide proof of age attested by the head of their institution.
