Prakash Karat invites Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat has invited AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa to participate in a condolence meeting to pay tributes to party veteran Harkishan Singh Surjeet in New Delhi on August 8.

A press release from the AIADMK headquarters said that Ms. Jayalalithaa had written to Mr. Karat informing him that the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, K. Malaisamy, would attend the meeting on her behalf.

Similar invitations

The CPI (M)’s State leadership said similar invitations had been sent to all political parties, including the BJP. “We have sent invitations to leaders of around 120 political parties, who sent condolence messages and attended the funeral. We have requested Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP president L.K. Advani, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, MDMK general secretary Vaiko to attend the meeting,” said Polit Bureau member K.Varadharajan.

Recalling the participation of L.K. Advani in the funeral of former Kerala Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboothiripad, Mr. Varadharajan said the condolence meeting had nothing to do with politics.

PMK leader S. Ramadoss has deputed the party’s Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss to attend the meeting.
