Work to lay Anna Road in Maraimalai Nagar began on Wednesday.

TAMBARAM: Work on laying two cement concrete roads at a cost of Rs.8.4 crore began in the Maraimalai Nagar Municipality on Wednesday.

It includes Anna Road, one of the important links to the industrial estate from Grand Southern Trunk Road, which has been in a battered condition for several years now. The 2.4-kilometre-long Anna Road would be provided a cement concrete surface at a cost of Rs.5.42 crore.

Sasikala Arumugham, Municipal Chairperson, said 80 per cent of the project cost would come in the form of a loan from the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation and the rest would be mobilised from the local body’s general funds.

She said the road had been in a shambles for a long time and though the present municipal council was elected two years ago, it too was unable to carry out the improvement work owing to various reasons.

In the past, bitumen-topped surfaces were provided but they were damaged due to the high volume of heavy vehicle traffic, Ms. Sasikala said.

The Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply engaged the Division of Transportation Engineering of Anna University as a consultant and based on its recommendations, submitted proposals to receive the sanction from State government.

Besides Anna Road, cement concrete surface would be provided for the 850-metre-long Paavendar Salai, for which Rs. 2.98 crore would be spent, Ms. Sasikala added.

K. Seenuvasan, Municipal Engineer, said the existing depth or level of the road would not be altered. The road’s thickness at present was 72 centimetres and all of it would be scooped and filled up with sand and cement concrete. Both the roads are expected to be completed in four months.

A. Bhaskaran, Municipal Commissioner, said more than Rs. 3 crore was being spent from the municipal funds on providing cement concrete and bitumen-topped roads in the industrial estate and Neighbourhoods (NH or residential localities as they are called here). Once completed, the roads would benefit about 350 industrial units apart from residents of the municipality and villages beyond it.
