Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The Federation of Residents Associations, Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has called upon the government to introduce a scheme to promote the use of solar energy units. The half-yearly meeting of the Federation here on Sunday adopted a resolution highlighting the need to encourage the installation of domestic solar-powered units. It called for a new railway line from Kanyakumari to Sabarimala through Thiruvananthapuram, Nedumangad, Kilimanoor, Kottarakara and Pathanamthitta. The new line had become necessary in view of the decision to drop the Sabari rail line, it said. The Federation urged the government to expedite the Capital-to-Capital highway project connecting Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram through Nedumangad and Ambasamudram. The new route, it claimed, would cut travel time between Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram to 10 hours. The meeting highlighted the need to complete the development of the Thiruvananthapuram airport in 2008 and provide a rail link through Pettah, Chakka and Kochuveli. It called for the development of an Inner Thiruvananthapuram rail route connecting suburban areas in the district. Other major proposals included the construction of a flyover on the main road between the VJT Hall and East Fort to ease traffic congestion, procurement of pothole patching machines and a five-year maintenance contract for all road works and construction of parking towers at busy locations.
