TIRUCHI: Over 100 Ph.D scholars of Bharathidasan University observed a fast in front of their hostel on Wednesday to protect against rigidity of food timings, and inadequacy of facilities. They were against enforcement of food timings as they had to spend substantial time in research. They were also piqued by the spurt in the mess fee under the dividing system. The system of permitting paying guests for food has been dispensed with. Three students had to stay in a room meant for two, they complained, adding that the bathrooms were inadequate and the lighting poor. Later in the day, they returned to the laboratories after university authorities assured them of remedial measures within a timeframe.
