PUDUKOTTAI: The State Committee of the Communist Party of India–Marxist (CPI-M) has urged the Centre to ensure safety of the lives and property of the fishermen while fishing at sea. A resolution adopted at the inaugural of the three-day State Committee meeting here on Wednesday said that the fishermen of Tamil Nadu were in need of security to their lives and property while fishing at the Indo–Sri Lankan border. It also wanted posting of officials with knowledge of Tamil at the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka to address the issues concerning Tamil Nadu fishermen. Another resolution wanted the State Government to take immediate action to tide over the problems stemming out of shortage in supply of fertiliser. Steps should be taken to re-open the SPIC factory in Tuticorin for stepping up production. Adequate stock should be ensured at the agricultural depots. The committee, through another resolution, expressed its support to the national bandh on August 20. Earlier in the day, the meeting was addressed by Polit Bureau member K. Varadarajan, State Secretary N. Varadarajan, Central Committee members T.K. Rangarajan, G. Ramakrishnan, U.R. Varadarajan, A.K. Padmanaban and U. Vasuki. They also addressed a public meeting explaining the party’s stand against the Nuclear deal, besides addressing other issues including the rise in the prices of essential commodities and the national strike called for August 20.
