Woman dies in accident

RAJAPALAYAM: A brand new van taken for puja to a temple in Papanasam knocked down two women, killing one on the spot, at Seithur near here on Wednesday morning.

The police said that the speeding van bearing ‘for registration’ sticker hit a telephone booth and a tea shop injuring a woman, M. Muthulakshmi (26), and her son, Karuppazhagu (3).

The accident took place on the Rajapalayam-Tenkasi highway at Ainthukadai bazaar at 6 a.m.

Then, it fatally knocked down A. Umamaheswari (25) when she was getting milk from a vendor. The woman was killed on the spot while the vendor was seriously injured.

The injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital here. The police intercepted the van as the driver, M. Anandan (32), tried to escape.
