HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Public School (Begumpet) entered the boys’ final of the seventh Fr. Devasia memorial inter-school basketball tournament with a 29-7 win over Gitanjali Public School in the semifinals at St. Patrick’s School here on Wednesday. Girls: St. Pious bt HPS Begumpet 21-8; St. Antony’s HS 19 bt Holy Family 13 (Shruthi 10). Sadhbhavana runThe Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Run will be organised by V. Hanumantha Rao, MP, on August 20 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Mr. Rao informed media here on Wednesday that the run would be flagged off at 7.15 am from four points — Dr. Ambedkar Statue (Tank Bund), Babu Jagjivan Ram Statue (Lal Bahadur Stadium), Mahatma Gandhi Statue (Secunderabad) and Jawaharlal Nehru Statue (Abids). About 2000 athletes are expected to take part in the run being organised to spread the message of communal harmony and also remind the contribution of Rajiv Gandhi to sports. On the occasion, Rao would present scholarships of Rs. 1000 per month for the next 12 months to two athletes in boys and girls sections who are to be identified by the AP Olympic Association general secretary L. Venkatram Reddy. He also appealed to the District Education Officer, sportspersons and APOA to extend all possible help to make the event a big success. The Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will address the participants at the culmination point — Rajiv Gandhi Statue (Somajiguda) — at 9.30 a.m. Hockey league from Aug. 10The Hyderabad Hockey Association will organise A-1 Division hockey league championship from August 10 at Begumpet Police Stadium, according to a press release. In view of the power-cut in the evening hours, all the matches are scheduled in the morning. An umpires’ clinic will be organised on August 8 at 5.30 pm at Begumpet Police Stadium. All the umpires are requested to attend. State-level chessAndhra Pradesh Chess Association will organise State-level championship at Peddapalli from August 17 with a total prize money of Rs.18,000. CBR Foundation of Sports chairman Chalasani Balaram handed over Rs. 25, 000 to Geeta and Rs. 10,000 to Ramesh. ANU vice-chancellor Hara Gopal Reddy also presented Geeta and her coach with Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively on behalf of the university. Krishna athletesSeven athletes from Krishna will take part in the South India athletic meet to be held at Coimbatore from August 8 to 10. They are: K. Anitha Devi (discus), R. Kumari (high jump), Vanitha Kumari (800m, 1500m), Gowsia (pole vault), N. Siva Kumar (100m, 200m, 4x100 relay), K. Durga Rao (discus) and S. Sudhakar (110m hurdles).
