Madurai DC to meet Vivekananda Arts & Science College

Chennai: Madurai District Club will meet Vivekananda Arts and Science College, Tiruchengode, in the final of the Winning XI Women’s Hockey Club State-level tournament on Wednesday.

In the semifinals played on Tuesday at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Madurai defeated Punitha Arogya Hockey Club, Keeranur, 2-0, on goals from Jennifer and Rasna.

Vivekananda Arts and Science College, Tiruchengode, beat Nazareth Club by an identical margin with Gayathri scoring a brace.

Quarterfinals: Vivekananda Arts and Science College, Tiruchengode, 2 (TB: Mohanapriya, Saranya) bt Vaishnava Club, Chennai, 1 (TB: R. Devi) (0-0 at the end of regulation time).

School Olympiad

The Rotary Olympiad for the city school students will be held here on August 21 (at ICF Stadium) and Tiruvallur (on August 11) at RMK Engineering College, according to S.N. Balasubramanian, coordinator, Tiruvallur Olympiad.

At a press conference here on Tuesday he said more than 1000 students are expected to participate.

The events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long and high jump & 4x400m & 4x100m relay (common relay races) for the students of std. VII, VIII and IX (juniors) and std. X to XII (seniors).

The top two from all the districts will take part in the finals of the inter-district Olympiad to be held on August 22 at ICF Stadium.

In its objective to bring out hidden talent, Rotary International District 3230 has been conducting the Rotary Olympiad every year among city school students for the last six years.

In a marked change this year, Rotary held track and field events in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, which turned out to be a “big success” according to the organisers.

Medals, certificates and T-shirts will be given to all the participants. “There is no registration fee and we are not charging anything from students. We are thankful to Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for its support,” said Balasubramanian.

Gopal hits century

M. Gopal hit 103 for Egmore CC in a drawn game against Kohinoor in a fourth division ‘B’ match of the TNCA league here recently.

The scores:

Div. IV ‘B’: YMA 242 for eight in 50 overs (S. Balaji 64, Vinod Kumar 51) drew with Sea Hawks 163 for seven in 41 overs.

Egmore 307 for seven in 50 overs (N. Sathish 61, M. Gopal 103, R. Vasantha Raj 68) drew with Kohinoor 172 for seven in 42.2 overs (Rajesh Kumar 98).

TUC 158 in 45.3 overs (G. Karthikeyan 54, A. Satish four for 27) lost to YMCA (Royapettah) 160 for three in 33.4 overs.

MUC 189 in 43.2 overs lost to Comrades 190 for eight in 46.4 overs (B. Sanjeevan 48 n.o.).

Vidya Mandir in final

St. Bede’s ‘A’ and Vidya Mandir will clash in the two-day final of the TNCA-Bost city schools under-16 cricket tournament for C. Ramaswamy Trophy to be held at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on August 12.

St. John’s 164 in 46.3 overs (P.R. Sylvester Jayan 46, S.R. Vibhu 43, Shikar Hukku 29, Rohan Shah three for 21) lost to Vidya Mandir 165 for five in 45.2 overs (P. Avinash 36, Aashish Srikrishna 57, L.S. Vedant 48 not out, Shikhar Hukku four for 27).

Easy for Modern HSS

Modern HSS defeated Sankara Vidyalaya by 102 runs in the Kancheepuram DCA inter-school league here.

The scores:

Modern HSS 165 for seven in 30 overs (Aswath 29, Bhargar four for 25) bt Sankara Vidyslaya (Pammal) 63 in 17 overs (Aswath three for 16).

Blessings Stars HSS 91 in 24.3 overs (Pankaj Khaur 36, Vijay Anand three for 23, Ashok three for seven) lost to Vyasa Vidyalaya 93 for two in 16.1 overs (Sivaraj Kishore 27).

Ihsan in last eight

Ihsan Hussain rallied to beat R. Raghavendra in three sets in the boys’ pre-quarterfinals of the KTC-TNTA junior tennis tournament (under-14), here on Tuesday.

In the girls’ singles first round, A. Sharmilla made short work of Utthra, winning 6-0, 6-2.
