TIRUCHI: The third anniversary of Tiruchi District Drama Artistes’ Association was marked by honouring of senior and upcoming artistes on Tuesday.

Noted cine director and actor S. Sundarrajan gave away the ‘Kalai Semmal’ awards to five senior artistes who included a woman. He also presented shields and certificates to three young artistes and handed over a purse of Rs. 6,666 to poor artistes at the function organised in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sundarrajan said Tiruchi had produced legendary drama and cine artistes over the years.

Eminent personalities such as M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, M. R. Radha, M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan had all acted in dramas before entering the cinema field.

N. Sekar, honorary secretary of Rasika Ranjana Sabha, said it had been established for organising dramas.

Drama artistes needed to be protected, he said, adding that the Sabha in association with the South Zone Cultural Centre at Thanjavur had been organising dramas once a week. The programmes had evoked an overwhelming response from local residents, he added.

Cine actor and magician Alex distributed membership cards to drama artistes on the occasion.

Association general secretary M. S. Mohamed Masthan said that monthly assistance was being provided to some artistes. The Association has 130 members.

Regional Assistant Director of Art and Culture R. Muthu and others offered felicitations.
