TIRUCHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged its maiden order for supply of 2 x 800 MW steam generators (boilers), with supercritical parameters, for the Rs.2,500-crore power project at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district. It outbid the L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Combine in an open global tender floated by the Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited, a joint venture of APGenco and ILFS, that promote the project. BHEL will manufacture, supply, erect and commission the steam generators and associated auxiliaries, including the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs). The supercritical boilers will be manufactured at BHEL’s boiler plant at Tiruchi. Its Hyderabad and Ranipet plants will supply the coal mills and the ESPs. BHEL recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for forming a joint venture that will set up a 2 x 800 MW supercritical thermal power project at Udangudi in Tiruchendur taluk of Tuticorin district. It will be the first supercritical power project in the State and will improve the availability of power. In the sub-critical range, BHEL has established a state-of-the-art technology for manufacturing thermal sets up to 600 MW rating and has the capability to make sets up to 1,000 MW. So far, it has won orders for 69 thermal sets of 500-600 MW rating, and 33 of them have been commissioned.
