Two new records set

Madurai: Two new meet records were set in the men’s section of the eighth all-India BSNL athletics meet at the MGR Race Course stadium here on Tuesday.

V. Rohit of Kerala clocked 1:53.5s to erase the old mark of 1:57.2s in 800m. Sheik Nisar Alam of Assam set a new record in high jump by clearing 1:93m as against the old mark of 1.91m.

The results:

Men: 200m: 1. Viksam Puthran (Kar) 22.2; 2. V.E. Girish (Ker); 3. Sunil Joseph (Ker).

800m: 1. V. Rohit 1:53.5s (NMR; OR 1:57.2s); 2. P. Vimal Kumar (Ker); 3. A. Shabeer (Ker); 5000m: 1. Sunil Yadav (Punjab) 17:44.5s; 2. Virender Yadav (Delhi); 3. Krishna Pada Mazumdar (North East); 110m hurdles: 1. Upendra Singh (Raj) 17.3s; 2. K.N. Dileep (Ker); 3. Jaswinder Singh (Pun).

Long jump: 1. V. Ashokkumar (TN) 7.07m; 2. K.N. Dileep (Ker); 3. Ravindara Desmukh (Chhattisgarh).

High jump: 1. Sheikh Nisar Alam (Assam) 1.93m (NMR; OR 1.91m); 2. K.N. Dileep; 3. V. Ashokkumar (TN); Shot put: 1. Upendra Singh 12.44m; 2. Vinod Kumar (UP); 3. T. Saravanakumar (TN).

Discus: 1. Upendra Singh 35.18m; 2. Vinod Kumar (UP); 3. Amarjit Singh (Pun).

4x400m relay: 1. Kerala 3:32.8s; 2. Karnataka.

Women: 200m: 1. Geetanjalai Jena (Orissa) 27.4s; 2. K. Meenakumari (Andhra Pradesh); 3. G. Umadevi (Andhra Pradesh).

Long jump: 1. Geetanjalai Jena 4.40m; 2. G. Umadevi; 3. Grace B. Pyngrope (North East); 4x400m relay: 1. Andhra Pradesh 6:08.0s; 2. Tamil Nadu; 3. Maharashtra.
Easy for NKCC

NKCC posted a 109-run win over ICRC (Sankari West) in the Canara Bank-DCAN first division cricket at the ICL Colony grounds recently.

The scores:

NKCC (Namakkal) 236 for nine in 40 overs (K. Venkatesh 59, V. Nandagopal 74 not out) bt ICRC (Sankari West) 127 in 33.1 overs; LMCC (Namakkal) 180 for eight in 35 overs (Arun 53 not out) lost to Rajaganapathy CC (Namakkal) 183 for six in 31 overs (Pasupathy 47, Sakthi 52 not out).
Throwball championship

The third District throwball championship for school boys and girls, organised by the Coimbatore District Throwball Association, will be held at the National Model MHSS from August 6 to 8.
Selection trials

Trials for the selection of the Madurai zonal TNEB teams, to participate in the inter-zonal athletics and games meet of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to be held at Tiruchi, will be held at MGR Race Course Stadium and TNEB central office ground from August 7 to 11.
