CESTAT quashes excise demand on Wimco
NEW DELHI: The Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) on Tuesday rejected a demand by excise officials for slapping duty and penalty on ITC group company, Wimco, for the sale of scrap paper left from the manufacture of paper boxes. The Excise Department had directed Wimco to pay Rs. 23.20 lakh as duty along with a fine of the same amount. The Department held that since the scrap was generated during the process of manufacturing empty match boxes, the company should also pay excise on it. — Special Correspondent
