Talco Trophy chess

KOCHI: The Talco Trophy under-15 chess tournament will be held at the Kadavanthra YMCA on August 9 and 10.

The tournament is basically a beginners’ event and players who have secured first and second positions in District or State-level competitions are not eligible.

Special prizes will be on offer for the best boys and girls in the under-8, 10 and under-12 sections, also for the best school.

Entries close with the Branch Secretary, Kadavanthra YMCA, (Ph: 2314307 or 94474-10422) on August 7.

Aneesh, Thulasi get top billing

K.A. Aneesh and P.C. Thulasi were given the top billing in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in the 24th T.K.V. Memorial State-ranking badminton tournament which begins at the Jimmy George indoor stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

Thomas Kurien, Jaseel P. Ismail, Sanave Thomas, Joy T. Antony and Jaison Xavier are some of the prominent players taking part in the men’s section.

In the women’s section, P.S. Linimol is the second seed while Daya Elsa Jacob, Merit George and Miral George are some of the top ranked players taking part.

State badminton

The State mini and sub-junior badminton championships, organised by the Ernakulam DBA, will be held at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kochi, from August 13 to 16.

The masters and veterans State championships will also be held simultaneously. The district badminton association’s website will be inaugurated during the championships. Entries should reach district secretary (Ph: 93886-20007) before 5 p.m. on August 9.

Chess championship

Over 100 players are expected for the State ‘A’ chess championship, which begins at the KSTA Auditorium in Kozhikode on Tuesday. Nine Swiss rounds will be played in the event, which concludes on August 9.

The Kerala team for the National ‘B’ championship in Goa from September 15 will be selected from this tournament.
