Essa stars for Mahatma

Madurai: An all-round performance by Abrar Essa (three for 20, 55 not out) helped Mahatma Montessori MHSS defeat Vikasa School by six wickets and enter the semifinals of the Madurai District Boost Trophy inter-school cricket tournament here on Monday.

The scores (quarterfinals): Vikasa School 125 in 24.5 overs (Rajkumar 29, Abrar Essa three for 20) lost to Mahatma Montessori MHSS 126 for four in 17.4 overs (Abrar Essa 55 not out).

TVS Lakshmi School 147 for nine in 25 overs (Karthik 44 not out, Prasanna Venkatesh 30, Vignesh 25, Monish three for 27) bt SDH Jain Vidyalaya 87 in 20.4 overs (Prasanna Venkatesh three for 19, Maheswaran three for 21).

MMHSS, Thirunagar 73 in 17.2 overs (Vinith four for 10) lost to American College HSS 74 for two in 14 overs (Mani 25 not out).

SBOA MHSS 203 for five in 25 overs (Syed Ibrahim 56, Manoj 28, Vignesh 25) bt Seventh Day MHSS 68 in 17 overs (Manoj three for 13).

At Sivakasi (First round): Sri Sowdanliga MHSS, Aruppukottai 115 in 29 overs (Vijayakumar 50, Govinda Ramakrishna three for 28) lost to HNV HSS, Sivakasi 116 for four in 12.3 overs (Govinda Ramakrishnan 26).

Govt. Juvenile Home, Mallipudur 92 in 17 overs (Manoj five for three) lost to Vinayaka MHSS 94 for seven in 15.2 overs (Manikandan four for 21).

At Ramanathapuram (First round): Schwartz MHSS 168 for six in 25 overs (Rajkumar 38, Balamanivannan 25, Kadabi three for 21) bt Govt. HSS, Periapatnam 77 in 19.2 overs (Pradeep three for 16, Srivaikumth three for 12).

Louis Levain MHSS 136 in 18.3 overs (Ramkumar 62) lost to Pallivasal HSS, Muthukulathur 137 for four in 14.2 overs (Siva 35, Gavaskar 27, Vinodh three for 23).

Karthik triumphs

T.R. Karthik of Madura College won the title in the Stag International inter-collgiate table tennis tournament defeating M. Jeyekumar of Sethu Institute of Technology 11-4, 13-11, 11-3 in the final at Madurai on Sunday.

The results (all finals): Boys: Junior singles: Jayanathan (KACA) bt S. Niklesh (Vikasa) 12-10, 11-6, 11-7; Sub-junior singles: B. Rajesh (TVS) bt Feroz (TVS) 8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6;

Cadet singles: S. Balakrishnan (SBOA) bt Divakaran (TVS) 11-3, 11-5, 11-7; Mini cadet singles: Harikaran (Mahatma Montessori) bt Meenakshi Sundaram (SBOA) 11-5, 11-5, 11-7;

Girls: Junior singles: Harnika (TVS MHSS) bt Sneha Arnika (Jain) 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.
BSNL athletics meet

The three-day eighth annual All India BSNL athletics meet organised by Tamil Nadu Circle and Cultural Board will get underway at MGR Race Course Stadium, Madurai on Tuesday.

The meet will have 22 events for men and 13 for woman and the total number of participants will be around 240 from 19 Circles of BSNL and MTNL, Mumbai.
Vetrivel takes honours

M. Vetrivel of Sethupathy HSS won the under-25 title in the District-level chess tournament organised by Chanakya Chess Academy at Madurai on Sunday.

Final standings: u-25: 1. M. Vetrivel 4/5; 2. P. Uma Maheswaran (Arul Malar MHSS) 4; 3. S. Periyadurai (Nadar HSS) 4.

U-14: 1. R. Karthikeyini (Dolphin) 5/5; 2. S. Muthaih Premnath (Mahatma MHSS) 4; 3. K. Seethalakshmi (Dolphin) 3.5.

U-12: 1. RM. Subramanian (Dolphin) 4.5/5; 2. V. Gautham (Velammal MHSS) 4.5; 3. K. Varshcine (Dolphin) 4. U- 10: 1. AP. Gautham (Dolphin) 5/5; 2. M. Ajay Krishnan (Lakshmi MHSS) 4; 3. K. Vignesh (TNPS) 4.
PSNA CE wins title

PSNA College of Engineering, Dindigul won the title in the Anna University zone IX inter-collegiate tennis tournament defeating KLN College of Engineering, Pottapalayam 3-1 at ACCET ground, Karaikudi recently.

The results: Final: PSNA CE bt KLN CE 3-1 (R. Ranjith bt Arun 6-0, 6-2, 6-2; Wilson lost to Madhu 4-6, 3-6, 4-6; Ranjith & Wilson bt Arun & Madhu 6-4, 6-0, 6-3; Wilson bt Arun 6-0, 6-0, 6-0). Third place: ACCET, Karaikudi bt TCE, Madurai 3-2.

Semifinals: PSNA CE bt ACCET 3-2; KLN CE bt TCE 3-1.
