Dacoit killed in encounter

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: Ambika Patel alias Thokiya alias Doctor, one of the most ruthless dacoits of Uttar Pradesh, was gunned down in an encounter with the Special Task Force in Silkhori jungles in Chitrakoot district on Monday.

Wanted in 60 cases, he carried on his head rewards of Rs.5 lakh announced by the U.P. government and Rs.1 lakh by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Thokiya was the only dacoit killed in an encounter that began around 2.30 a.m. The remaining 19 members of his gang, some of whom were injured, managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Thokiya was carried for some distance by his gang. But they were forced to abandon him in the wake of relentless firing by the 24-member STF team led by SP Amitabh Yash and ASP Anant Deo.
