Ramu emerges fastest

BANGALORE: Madras Engineering Group’s (MEG) Bhairashetty Ramu, though slack off the blocks, ran a superb last 70 metres to emerge the fastest man in Karnataka with a 10.50 seconds effort, his personal best, in the 100 metres dash for men on the opening day of the three-day Karnataka State senior and junior athletic championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Monday. Ramu’s previous best was during the World Military Games trials last year at 10.56 seconds.

There was a festive air at the stadium with the organisers combining the sub-junior and junior meet along with the seniors and a 32 strong team from Sri Lanka provided the glamour.

But sadly the numbers was just in the under-14 and under-16 categories while most the men, women and even under-20 events in the track lacked numbers and a direct final was conducted.

Sujatha Nayak of Canara Bank won the 100m for women with a 12.6 seconds effort. The timings was largely possible due to the organisers advancing the finish line by 10 metres and pushing back the starting point due to the worn out conditions of the tracks at the finish and the curves.
