Sunil Kumar in second round

NEW DELHI: Wild card Sunil Kumar fought his way past Riccardo Ghedin of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the ATP Challenger tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday. Yuki Bhambri lost 6-7(2), 7-5, 2-6 to the sixth-seeded Alexander Slabinsky of Britain while Ashutosh Singh fell to Tatsuma Ito of Japan.

The results: Singles (first round): Toshihide Matsui (Jpn) bt Ivo Klec (Svk) 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4; Sunil Kumar bt Riccardo Ghedin (Ita) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Tatsuma Ito (Jpn) bt Ashutosh Singh 7-5, 6-4; Brydan Klein (Aus) bt Hiroki Kondo (Jpn) 6-3, 6-4.

Alexander Slabinsky (GBR) bt Yuki Bhambri 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2; Pierrick Ysern (Fra) bt Greg Jones (Aus) 6-3, 7-6(1); Chris Eaton (GBR) bt Mohammed Al Ghareeb (Kuw) 6-2, 7-5; Joshua Goodall (GBR) bt Takao Suzuki (Jpn) 6-2, 6-4.

Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Matthew Ebden and Brydan Klein (Aus) bt Divij Sharan and Vishnu Vardhan 6-3, 6-2.
