BANGALORE: With a 2.4 inch screen, loaded with GPS-enabled maps for eight cities, including Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi, and built-in map compass, Nokia 6210 Navigator phone was launched here on Monday. Costing Rs. 18,000, the handsets come with the maps free for six months.

Nokia India’s Director-Marketing Devinder Kishore told reporters that “Market research showed, after messaging and net connectivity, mobile users wanted navigational aids on mobiles, especially in metros with a constantly changing skyline and road diversions.

“The maps have been approved by the Surveyor General of India and an outsourced provider would keep updating them. The compass on the maps is for when you want to walk and explore”.

Value additions included realtime voice and visual guidance, 2D/3D night time map views and option to add the user’s favourite locations such as a restaurant, cinema or a friend’s house, Mr. Kishore said.

Over the coming months, maps for more cities were to be added and an arrangement existed to order maps for cities overseas, Mr. Kishore said.

Nokia India’s largest research and development and design studio facilities are in Bangalore and the company is investing $75 million this year on its manufacturing facility near Chennai.
