TRAGIC END: Bodies of those killed in the truck accident being kept in the open for the purpose of identification on Sunday. Lakhisarai (Bihar): The death toll in the Saturday night road accident in Lakhisarai district has mounted to 40, with the death of five more persons on Sunday, police said. Thirty-five farm workers were killed and 15 injured, 10 seriously, when a truck loaded with people and food grain sacks fell off a culvert and plunged into a rivulet near Ghongsa village. “Of the 10 seriously wounded, five died in the hospital at Sikandra in the adjoining Jamui district,” said S.P. Shukla, Superintendent of Police, Lakhisarai. The condition of five others in the hospital is serious. All the bodies have been sent for postmortem. The tragedy occurred when 50 farm labourers were returning to their homes at Mansi in Khagaria district after sowing paddy at nearby Akauni village. The driver lost control of the vehicle on the culvert without railings and the truck plummeted into the rivulet. Most of the people died after being crushed underneath the truck and foodgrain sacks. There was little water in the rivulet. — PTI
