Water billing - Reader's Mail

The proposed system of water billing for metered water supply does not appear to be correct.

In various apartments, there are flats ranging from one bed-room to four or even more. How is it justified to divide equally among the flats the total water consumed?

The best method appears to be to send a consolidated bill to the apartments’ associations concerned. They should pay the bill and collect the amount from the residents on the basis of the method approved by their general body.

Street-light not burning

There is no street-light at the roundabout linking the Kakkalur-Avadi High Road with Tiruvallur-Poonamallee High Road near Tiruvallur Taluk Office. The area totally plunges into darkness at night, causing inconvenience to vehicular traffic. It is indeed a pathetic scene to see the traffic police constable in pitch darks risking himself to accident. The TNEB, Tiruvallur is earnestly requested to remedy the situation on war-footing.

Bus stop

The Alandur cement road bus stop situated on the GST road and well-connected with Nanganallur is a chartered stop for white board buses only. As a result, many buses from the Ambattur and Vadapalani area and from the Tambaram area do not halt at this stop for want of orders from the MTC. It would be highly beneficial to commuters visiting Nanganallur if MTC ordered halting of all buses at this stop so that those who get down at this stop can change to other buses to reach Nanganallur or they can use other modes of conveyance.

For the comfort of rail commuters

Tiruninravur is a vital suburban area on the Chennai-Arakkonam sector, famous for two ancient temples and many new temples, educational institutions and industrial establishments. The number of rail commuters has increased.

The season ticket counter opened in April 1985, though belated, was shifted to the new building at the eastern end of the passengers’ waiting hall. The counter service is inadequate. The old counter should be reopened immediately as an additional facility. Construction of a two-lane subway at the eastern end of the platforms providing for passage of passengers from and to all platforms (as at Perambur) and for movement of three-wheelers, though assured in 2004, is yet to be implemented. The existing rail under-bridge behind Angel School, connecting Lakshmipuram and Tiruvengadanagar on the western side is too narrow. Simultaneous movement of two-wheelers in opposite directions inside the subway is not possible. When the vehicles enter the subway the pedestrians have to stand outside. As such the proposed subway on the east should be sufficiently wide.

Provision of shelter for the foot overbridge is essential before the north-east monsoon sets in. Will the railway authorities take steps?

New metro bus service

Though many services on new routes are introduced by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, there is not even a single new route from Perambur depot. Since new busses are purchased now by the corporation, it is high time that a direct bus from Perambur to Vandalur Zoo through Sterling Road, Valluvar Kottam, Kasi Theatre, Guindy, and Tambaram was introduced which would also fulfil the need of a direct bus from Perambur to K.K. Nagar.

Alternatively the bus service 170C from Tambaram to T. V. K. Nagar may be extended upto Perambur.

Will the authorities do the needful?

Aavin milk supply

New Colony residents did not get their Aavin milk supply on the morning of August 1, 2008.

We understand that owing to shortage of vans, Aavin milk couldn’t be supplied on that day. But the day being auspicious (Aadi Amavasai), we were put to inconvenience. For the past one month, we have been getting milk only after 7 a.m.

We appeal to the authorities to ensure that we receive the milk before 6 a.m.

Bad maintenance

I am a resident of Postal & Telecom quarters, Teynampet, the heart of the city. We have two gates for the premises, the first gate near Sun TV office and other gate near Raj TV office.

The Central government quarters is stinking as total maintenance is discarded; garbage, debris, weeds have not been cleared for months and carpentry work is also pending. Owing to the unclean atmosphere, mosquitoes keep on breeding. Will the officials concerned do the needful?

Official reply

In response to the complaint made by Baskaran in these columns of The Hindu dated 28-07-08 about the faulty functioning of three ‘person-weighing machines’ at the Chennai Beach Railway Station, a team of officials, led by the Controller of Legal Metrology, M. Ravichandran, along with K. Veerappan, Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology, inspected all the seven person-weighing machines at the station on the forenoon of 29-7-08.

During the inspection, it was found that all the 7 person-weighing machines were found showing wrong weighments and the machine were seized by the team.

The functioning of the machines was stopped forthwith and the machines will be subjected to re-verification and stamping by the inspector concerned.

Necessary legal action against the owners of the machines has been initiated.
