Special Bond: Youngsters in all smiles while celebrating Friendship Day at a fast food joint in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: It was a day for fun and frolic for children and youngsters as Friendship Day was celebrated witha gusto in various localities of the city on Sunday. It was indeed a wonderful occasion to celebrate one’s friendship by presenting gifts and conveying greetings in style. Many of course preferred sending straight from their heart, Happy Friendship Day SMSs on their cell phones. The volume of mobile SMS traffic was so high that it got jammed intermittently. To make a fast buck, the mobile operators also suspended concession SMS charge by collecting Re. 1 per SMS. “I am on 10 paise per SMS scheme. Hence, it makes no sense for me to send SMS today. I called up on mobile to all those who sent me SMS by spending just 60 paise per minute,” Pallavi, an SMS addict remarked. CelebrationsThe celebration took riotous shape with the exchange of greetings and pleasantries and hugging since morning. Gangs of friends also found beach road as the venue for perfect outing. Businessmen dealing with sweets, chocolates, cakes and pastries had impressive sales on Sunday. Bouquets and flowers were in demand. Soft toys and other souvenirs were also preferred items to mark the occasion. All the hotels were decked up tastefully with illumination and Friendship Day banners and festoons. While it was a simple get-togethers at tuitions and tiny food kiosks for school children after tying up friendship bands, college students and others planned partying in advance by thronging popular food joints and discotheques. Shaking a leg with friends was the highlight at star hotels. Programmes by popular DJs were organised at Chrome and 10 Downing. Hotels, as usual, organised special Friendship Day buffets. “I had lot of fun with my friends. We started the day with tying bands and later went to a fast food joint, cut a cake and had some noodles going the Dutch way,” said Sandhya, a 10th standard student.
