Anand, Carlsen share lead

NEW DELHI: Aiming for an eighth straight title, World champion Viswanathan Anand pulled off a 48-move victory over Russia’s Alexander Morozevich to share the lead with Norwegian sensation Magnus Carlsen after three rounds of the 13th Grenkeleasing rapid world chess championship at Mainz in Germany on Friday.

In this four-player double round-robin league, the top two players will qualify for Sunday’s final. In each game, a player gets 20 minutes of thinking time plus five seconds for every move made.

Anand opened his title-defence with a 31-move draw with Carlsen and again split point with Judit Polgar in 61-moves. Judit, however, lost her games to Morozevich and Carlsen.

In the North Urals Cup women’s tournament, Krasnoturinsk in Russia, top seed K. Humpy’s superior end-game skills saw her prevail over Russian tailender Natalia Pogonina in the sixth and penultimate round on Saturday.

The results: Rapid World Championship (third round): Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 1.5) lost to Viswanathan Anand (2); Judit Polgar (Hun, 0.5) lost to Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 2); (second round): Anand drew with Judit; Carlsen drew with Morozevich; (first round): Anand drew with Carlsen; Judit lost to Morozevich.

North Urals Cup (sixth round): K. Humpy (3) bt Natalia Pogonina (Rus, 2); Pia Cramling (Swe, 3) bt Antoaneta Stefanova (Bul, 4); Xu Yuhua (Chn, 3) lost to Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 3.5); Anna Muzychuk (Slo, 2.5) drew with Marie Sebag (Fra, 3).

Biel Masters (11th round): N. Srinath (7) bt Ehud Shachar (Isr, 6); Arnold Huhndorf (Ger, 5.5) lost to R. B. Ramesh (6.5). Standings: 20. Srinath, 27. Ramesh.

Kavala International Open (third round): S. Satyapragyan (1.5) lost to Marin Bosiocic (Cro. 2.5); Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (2) drew with Alexandre Kharitonov (Rus, 2); Borko Lajthajm (Srb, 2) drew with V. Saravanan (2); Andrey Orlov (Rus, 2) drew with Prathamesh Mokal (2).

Edmonton International (third round): Bindi Cheng (Can, 1.5) lost to Surya Shekhar Ganguly (2.5); (second round): Ganguly bt Greg Huber (Can).
