LIC springs a surprise

Nagpur: India’s second-best paddler Subhajit Saha failed to live up to his reputation, as Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) defeated Ordnance Factory Sports Control Board (OFSCB) 3-1 on the opening day of the all-India inter-institutional table tennis championship here on Saturday.

Subhajit, mainstay of OFSCB, was stunned by LIC’s Zaberjeet Singh 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 in a Group B encounter, while Indeebar Chatterjee and Jayanta Chandra were beaten by R. Rajesh 11-6, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 and 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 respectively.

Chandra, however, restored some pride for OFSCB, defeating Vinay Baiswade 11-7, 14-12, 11-8.

Rajath shines

In Group C, Tamil Nadu lad A. Rajath Kamal led Dena Bank to a 3-1 win over Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Rajath defeated Gagan Choudhary 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 and Mukul Boro 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 and G. Jitendra sealed the tie downing J.S. Bisht 11-7, 11-3, 11-6.

Canara Bank defeated Indian Air Force 3-0 in Group A, while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was beaten by Airports Authority of India in Group B.

Major Ports Sports Control Board and Postal Sports Control Board also registered victories against Indian Bank Central Sports Committee (3-2) and State Bank of Indore (3-0) respectively.

Men’s team championships: (First round):

Group A: Defence Accounts Sports Control Board w/o Union Bank; Canara Bank bt Indian Air Force 3-0.

Group B: Airports Authority of India bt Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited 3-0; LIC bt Ordinance Factory Sports Control Board 3-1.

Group C: Dena Bank bt Reserve Bank of India 3-1; Food Corporation of India w/o Coal India.

Group D: Major Ports Sports Control Board bt Indian Bank Central Sports Committee 3-2; Postal Sports Control Board bt State Bank of Indore 3-0. — PTI
