Container station likely at old airport

Move to convert cargo station at old airport.

AP TPC waiting for customs clearance

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Trade Promotion Corporation, formerly APSTC, is awaiting customs clearance for converting its cargo station at the Old Begumpet Airport into a container station, J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Major Industries, said here on Saturday.

She told a press conference after inaugurating the corporation’s paper products complex at Mamidipally village, in Maheshwaram mandal, Ranga Reddy district, built over 2.5 acres at a cost of Rs.3 crore. The paper products division was earlier located in a dilapidated building at Lakdikapul, here.

The Minister stated that the corporation was looking at setting up cargo hubs at Tirupati on the lines of one located in Visakhapatnam. It also planned to create logistic hubs. The corporation would set up trade centres in cities/towns across the State. They would come up at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Warangal and Tirupati.

She said the complex would be used for storing raw material, like paper, and finished products, like notebooks. The manufacture of the ‘Lepakshi Nandi’ brand of notebooks by the corporation was being improved. Its turnover this year was Rs.27 crore, as against Rs.22 crore in 2007-08, and was expected to go up by five-ten per cent later during the year.

The Minister went around Rajiv Gems Park located at Maheshwaram. Of the 5,000 workmen of the unit, 4,000 are employed and 1,000 are being trained at ITI Mallepally. Of them 40 per cent are women and 15 per cent disabled. When completed it will provide jobs to 15,000 persons, including locals.
