Social welfare schools and hostels come under scrutiny

VIJAYAWADA: The functioning of social welfare schools and hostels in Krishna district came under close scrutiny at a review meet conducted by district Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer on Saturday, where she called upon the principals and welfare officers to play a proactive role in ensuring high educational standards and living conditions.

The Collector held meetings with the principals and welfare officers separately. She made it clear to the welfare officers that they would have to own up responsibility for students not joining the hostels or dropping out from them. There were a large number of vacancies in some of the hostels located in Vijayawada rural, Nandigama, Mopidevi, Movva and Guduru mandals, she pointed out, asking the welfare officers to meet the parents of potential inmates and find out from them why they were not admitting their wards into the hostels.

Ms. Ramaiyer noted that girls were still being used in villages for agricultural works and such ones should be identified and persuaded to join the hostels. She also called upon the officials to take special interest in the health of the inmates, and get them treated under Rajiv Arogyasri programme in the case of any need.

The Collector wanted the welfare officials to bring the inmates of the hostels to the mega camp of Rajiv Arogyasri being organised in the city on the occasion of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s visit on August 6.

Ms. Ramaiyer asked the principals to take special care of the food served in schools and get it checked with the gazetted food inspector.
