NSUI activists lathi-charged

Staff Correspondent

“Congress would uproot BJP in M.P.”

BHOPAL: Police resorted to a lathi-charge immediately after Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had left after addressing a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) rally at the busy Roshanpura Square here on Saturday.

The police swung into action when the NSUI workers tried to burn an effigy of the State Chief Minister. Some NSUI activists who were trying to jump the police barricades were chased and beaten up by the police. The NSUI activists retaliated by hurling chairs at the police.

The police had erected a series of barricades to stop the NSUI activists from marching to the Chief Minister’s bungalow. Vehicular traffic was affected for several hours in the New Market area. One of the main demands of NSUI relates to holding of direct students’ union elections in the State. This demand acquires special significance in view of the State Assembly elections later this year.

Mr. Scindia arrived at about 5 p.m. to address the NSUI rally at the heavily barricaded Roshanpura Square. In his brief address, he said that the Congress would uproot the “corrupt BJP Government” from Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier, State Congress president Suresh Pachouri said in his speech that the NSUI workers were being implicated in false cases by the police. “When we come to power, all such cases would be withdrawn,” he said.
