They are Scheduled Tribes in Dakshina Kannada

HASSAN: The Karnataka Rajya Kammara Sangha which has a membership of 12 lakh in the State has appealed to the Chief Minister to create a separate corporation for the development of their community.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, president of state sangha C.P. Manjunatha said the community had been neglected and deprived of basic facilities.

Mr. Manjunatha said that in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district and in Dakshina Kannada district, the community had been classified as Scheduled Tribe. He appealed to the Chief Minister for uniform categorisation of the community all over the State.

Mr. Manjunath said most community members were blacksmiths. They had been manufacturing agricultural tools for farmers for the past so many years. Despite this, the community was socially, economically and politically backward. The community was included in the 2A category, he said and urged the Chief Minister to provide them with a special economic package for their overall development. Mr. Manjunatha sought free education for their children and scholarships, among other facilities.
