Saint-Gobain, IIT-Madras sign MoU

CHENNAI: The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Research and Development Division of Saint-Gobain and Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Friday paved the way for long-term collaborative research and education in the area of advanced materials, energy materials, energy conservation, production and environment protection.

The formal agreement was signed by the Scientific Director of Saint Gobain, Herve Arribart, and Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research of IIT-Madras, T.T. Narendran, in the presence of the Director of IIT-M M.S. Ananth.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, president-Flat Glass, South Asia and Managing Director of Saint Gobain Glass India Limited, B. Santhanam, said the first approved project under the guidance of A. Subrahmanyam of the Department of Physics, IIT-Madras, would be on synthesis and characterisation of thin film materials.

These will find use in photovoltaic and opto-electronic applications.

Photovoltaic capital of country

This agreement will also be a small step towards making Chennai the photovoltaic capital of the country in the next five years.

Dr. Ananth, said the agreement with Saint Gobain was part of the conscious decision taken by IIT-Madras to look at emerging new areas of collaborative research.

It was also looking at tapping the opportunities in areas such as solar thermal energy.

Tie-up with 8 world class universities

Scientific Director of Saint Gobain, Herve Arribart, said the company had collaborative research programmes with eight world class universities.

Managing Director, Saint Gobain Sekurit India and Coordinator for the collaborative research partnership between IIT-Madras and the company, Sreeram Srinivasan, said that the agreement would go a long way in looking at more emerging technologies, especially in green materials and green house technologies.
