Government’s IT policy directionless, says PMK

Special Correspondent

“It did not make any review of experiences gained in the wake of the 2002 policy”

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on Friday termed “directionless and vague,” the Information and Communication Technology Policy unveiled by the State government early this week.

In a statement, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said the policy did not make any review of experiences gained in the wake of the 2002 policy. It did not mention the benefits that had accrued to the State.

The projections of employment were ambitious and unrealistic.

Noting that the present policy continued to provide concessions and facilities being enjoyed by the IT sector, he expressed concern over exemption given to the sector from several laws.

There was an opinion among experts that certain concessions and facilities were not gender-sensitive.

Dr. Ramadoss said his expression of shortcomings in the policy should not be regarded as anti-development.

Comprehensive report sought

It was for the government to address and overcome them. The administration should publish a comprehensive report on the growth of the IT sector and the employment generated in the last six years.
