Kadavaur group eligible for bank loans: Collector

KARUR: Voluntary organisations working in the field of self-help group formation should work earnestly to improve the lot of downtrodden women, Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy said at Taragampatti in Karur district on Thursday.

Speaking at a function organised to disburse credit to women self-help groups, Mr. Palanisamy pointed out that the SHG concept had greatly helped in the uplift and emancipation of downtrodden women especially in the rural areas.

The movement has also created awareness among women on various social issues.

‘Tremendous job’

The SHGs were doing a tremendous job of making women self confident and independent.

Since the groups had a good payment track record, bankers were more than willing to extend credit to them, the MP observed.

A sum of Rs. 1.28 crore was disbursed to 140 SHGs.

The amount was extended as direct credit, revolving fund and economic development assistance.

Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that within a short span of time the SHGs in the Kadavaur and Thogamalai region have made themselves eligible for bank loans.

Laudable

The role of the Indian overseas Bank in extending credit to the SHGs in the region was particularly laudable and the sizeable amount extended to the SHGs on the occasion was proof enough of their commitment to women’s development, he underlined.

The women should gainfully utilise the funds and take forward steps in their march for economic uplift, he added.

Krishnarayapuram MLA P. Kamaraj, Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Erode Region, S.H. Kesava, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, S. Ayyaru, Lead District Manager K. Chandrasekaran and others spoke.
